Beautiful Bavaria – a day at the Tegernsee

Posted on September 23, 2014

A week in Bavaria wouldn’t be complete without a road trip out to the Tegernsee. This cozy, idyllic, beautiful lake is situated only an hour outside Munich, and together with Frank, we made a day of sightseeing the countryside. Walking along the water, gorging ourselves with wholesome German food and then hiking it off in the mountains surrounding the lake made for one of our favorite days in Southern Germany.

Oktoberfest

Posted on September 21, 2014

It was the first weekend of Oktoberfest, so we suited up in Bavarian garb, headed over to Wiesn and joined the throngs of people in the revelry. Melissa wore my mother’s traditional hat & jacket (they’re 60 years old and still in beautiful condition) and Frank’s Lederhosen were a big hit in the Bräurosl tent.

Over 7 million liters of beer are consumed during the festival, and we were happy to contribute to that with a few big Maß of our own. Traditional Bavarian foods like Hendl, Schweinebraten, Brezen, Knödel, Kartoffelsalat and Weisswurst are everywhere, so we had no choice but to eat our way through the festival as well.

First days in München

Posted on September 21, 2014

We’ve started our one week adventure in München for Oktoberfest with our favorite road tripping friend, Frank. In our first days here, we’ve spent a lot of time walking along the Isar River, admiring traditional Bavarian outfits and making our way through the gorgeous old town and its historic squares. Frank walked us through the Englischer Garten, which quickly became our favorite spot for people watching, lounging in the grass and soaking up the late summer sun.

One of the cool things we saw while in the Garten is ice brook surfing (Eisbach) in the Isar. The river forms a powerful current where surfers queue up for their chance to ride the meter-high wave. The water is shallow and cold, but the spot was still filled with adventurous sporty types lining up to practice on their boards. It was pretty cool & unexpected to see river surfing in the middle of this beautiful city.

Friends in Berlin

Posted on August 9, 2014

We’ve been lucky to have quite a few friends & family members come visit, which is wonderful because we love sharing our new (temporary) home with others. Frank & Louis came to Berlin from Cologne and we met up with them at a lovely Friday night picnic. It was another beautiful Berlin weekend, so we met up at the Tiergarten and strolled through a flohmarkt, the park and discovered one of the cutest biergartens in all of Berlin.

We’ve seen Raimond a handful of times, and were able to spend the weekend with him & Stefan brunching, shopping & sightseeing. My friend Taleah came from New York, and we used her visit as a good reason to be a tourist in our own town too, going to museums, parks and restaurants we hadn’t discovered yet.

Thomas’s sister Susanne came from Essen so we biked all over town, showing her our favorite flohmärkte and parks. And of course, we have Alexandra, Ben & Christian who we see nearly every week. We’ve loved spending Saturday nights at their See House, grilling and enjoying the beautiful Berlin summer weather.

Glück mit guten Freunden

Wuppertal, Germany:  Andrea & Mattias hosted Frank, Eddie, Thomas & me at their beautiful home here in Wuppertal on 29 December. It was a wonderful coming together of old friends on a very special night. Andrea, Frank & Thomas had gone to art school and traveled together throughout Italy working on photography projects over the years. To have Frank & Eddie in from Cologne, and Melissa & Thomas visiting from the US, here in Wuppertal with Andrea & Mattias made for a very warm reunion. The meal Andrea & Mattias put together was perfect for a post-Weihnachten detox: Butternut-Kürbis mit Zwiebeln Suppe, Karotten mit Sesamkörner, Brokkoli mit Kapern, sehr lekker Linsen, Pilze, Kohlrabi mit Rüben und mehr und mehr (bitte entschuldigen Sie alle grammatikalische Fehler…
